So how did the night go for us?  Well, lets just say that little Gabe slept long and very sound and didn’t mention it again.

If you have ever gone to the doctor for an ear infection you most likely would have left with that slip of paper that says you have the green light to spend money on medication that in nearly all cases will have no affect on the problem.   I’m talking antibiotics here.   According to many documented studies it appears that ear infection or otitis media accounts for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States. Acute ear infections are the most common childhood illness in the United States where antibiotics are routinely prescribed. A 2006 study estimated that it costs about $350 to treat each episode of the illness, with yearly national costs totaling $2.8 billion and up to $5 billion in indirect costs.  Antibiotics, which is the usual treatment, are not always effective and may even lead to a recurring ear infections and other illness.

David Tunkel M.D., director of pediatric otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins University Hospital says:

“Many parents don’t like to hear this, but most ear infections will go away on their own. That sounds like heresy for anyone brought up in the antibiotics age, but its true.  And with increasing resistance to antibiotics and the breeding of superbugs, it’s important to get comfortable with using pain relievers alone to treat ear infections.”

For so many of the minor childhood illnesses if we were to just leave them alone their immune systems would fight it off naturally.  I hope you paid close attention to the video and the remedy for it, but if you didn’t here it is in a nutshell………essential oils!! All too often we disrupt the opportunity for our bodies to take charge and innately rid theses illnesses the way they were supposed to be rid.  Essentials oils have the ability to penetrate a cell wall and invoke fast, effective healing and soothe an inflamed ear.   In the case of my son, we put melaleuca, helichrysm, and basil essential oils on a cotton ball and placed it in his ear (and rubbed a little behind his hear) and he found instant relief and so did mom and dad.  This healing occurs in adults and children alike.   I only use doTERRA essential oils because they are the most clean and potent available today and will yield zero side effects.  Basil has been shown to help in the cure of all ear disorders.

When I was young I got my tonsils out when I was 18 months old and had tubes put in twice.  I still have issues with hearing and constant ringing in my ear.  It’s been kind of a joke in my household because my husband thinks I am selectively listening.  Point is  surgery isn’t always the best solution.

A 1989 study showed that the surgery offered no advantage over doing nothing in terms of duration of the disease, recurrence of disease, subsequent surgery, or hearing loss after twelve months, even for patients with serious initial hearing loss.

Routine removal of adenoids, practiced by many surgeons, has no beneficial effect on the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear and consequent hearing loss.

Most children receiving the operation continue to get ear infections.

The operation may have to be repeated, about 30% of the time, according to one study, and more than 50% in children under two years old.

Chronic fluid in the ear and accompanying hearing loss tends to improve spontaneously. A study shows improvement without treatment in more than 80% of children, with 50% returning to near normal. —Paul Bergner, Medical Herbalism

Here are some tips on ways to prevent future ear infections:

• Don’t insist on antibiotics
• Don’t smoke
• Don’t overdo the pacifier
• Don’t ban chewing gum (xylitol gum will actually assist to alleviate ear infections)
• Don’t go bottle–BREASTFEED!
